Look!  Parking cones hold recorders perfectly and you don’t accidentally run them over (well, we try not to…).  Pipe insulation works to isolate Microphone Stands (John’s idea…) Orange Duct Tape (I hate duct tape but this stuff you can see even at a blurry eyed 3:00am) and last but not least, the Audix OM5.  Better known as an SM57 if an SM57 was a microphone and not actually a hammer disguised as a microphone.

Sundance 2011 Martha Marcy May Marlene

Trying hard not to be sycophantic or sound like an ass kiss but, so far, this is it for me…  Of the movies that I have worked on, this is not only my favorite film, but also my favorite sounding film…  The best job I think I have done?  Someone else has to decide that.  I don’t know how to put my satisfaction into words.  In the end I liken it to finding a new sound, something to me that is totally and creatively fulfilling.  Sean was a pleasure.  He is confident and trusting, listens well and makes solid and clear decisions that take into account what a person who does what I do brings to the equation.  Sean, listened to new ideas and used those to create even better ideas.  And as is often the case, when something had to go (yes I still love the flies that did not make it in…) you knew why and it was always to the better for the film.  Always a team effort and in this day and age that matters so much.  Not to mention Zac.  Zac rules, humble fucking rock star.  So back to how do I say this stuff without sounding like an insufferable ass kiss…  Fukit.  I am very proud of what I think is a Great movie.

I have done more than a few gun recording sessions… This time we just went to go shoot and forget recording for once… Lets just say smell the roses? Or prove to my friends that in addition to being a sound geek, I am a really good shot with a .45.

And by the way, what the hell kind of sound guy would I be if while in Texas I did not go buy my favorite fireworks?

Field recording EFX and “foley” for a game and it is killing me… Snow fell schedules changed cloth jingles are never right… What the hell does dead flesh sound like when it moves? How do I make claws for non-human humans?

(Black Swan got an Oscar and Golden Reel nod, and SALT got a Golden Reel nod but I did so little on them… Craig H. an amazing Supervising Sound Editor / Mixer who has the best fucking attitude in the universe, got me to record some dancing for Black Swan. I think they used a bit of it but my contribution was minor at best… And SALT, well… The plane sounds are in and the organ sounds are in and the ADR stuff I recorded is in… My credit was not as lucky. Does not matter, I did a little less than nothing… And the day recording the organ was a blast.

I think there are a few more that I am missing but in the end it was a critically successful year.
